UC Berkeley Students Commemorate Massacre in Taiwan

Students at UC Berkeley have planned a series of activities to commemorate the “2-28 Massacre,” in remembrance of the tens of thousands of Taiwanese killed by Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist Chinese government during the days and months immediately following February 28, 1947 in Taiwan.  The “2-28 Massacre” serves as a burning memory in the minds of the Taiwanese, who were subsequently subjected to four decades of repressive Kuomintang rule until Martial Law was lifted in 1987.  Taiwan is now a democracy with free elections.

In addition to commemorating those who suffered, the 5th annual remembrance on UC Berkeley campus, including Upper Sproul memorial activities and a memorial evening, entitled, “The ‘2-28 Massacre’: Taiwan’s Tragedy Rememberedstrives to bring awareness to students, the UC Berkeley campus, and the Berkeley community about the abuses committed against the Taiwanese people, and the resulting surge of Taiwanese identity.

5th Annual “The ‘2-28 Massacre’: Taiwan’s Tragedy Remembered:

February 27 & 28, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Upper Sproul: Students will commemorate the “2-28 Massacre” with outdoor museum.  [Music by the families of the victims will be played during the noon hour.]

February 28, 7:00 p.m., 125 Morrison Hall: A Memorial Evening will feature Mr. Tom Yang and Mr. Philip Wu.  They will speak to us about the “2-28 Massacre.”  Mr Yang, a distinguished member of Toastmasters International, is an active member of the World United Formosans for Independence (WUFI-USA), and serves as the organization’s Historian.  Mr. Philip Wu is a famed tenor trained at Julliard, and works as an engineer.  He is the president of Northern California Formosan Federation (NCFF) and former president of Formosan Association for Human Rights (FAHR).

There will be a raffle of “Our Treasury: The Shaping of First-Generation Taiwanese Americans,” written by Sibyl Chen, a former organizer of Berkeley Students for a Sovereign Taiwan.

In addition, UC Berkeley’s campus newspaper, the Daily Californian will contain a commemoration announcement on the “2-28 Massacre” on February 28.

“The ‘2-28 Massacre’: Taiwan’s Tragedy Remembered” is organized by Berkeley Students for a Sovereign Taiwan (BST), and is ASUC sponsored and wheelchair accessible.
