This daytime event features Taiwanese traditional and contemporary music and a display that presents pictures of
Taiwan's landmarks, indigenous peoples and natural scenery. These pictures of Taiwan will be shown on a cup design
of "po-pa"-a Taiwanese invention also known as pearl milk tea. A few phrases romanized in Taiwanese will also be
presented.
Taiwanese Movie Night
Thursday, April 24, 2003 from 6:30 P.M. to 9:00 P.M., 229 Dwinelle
Good Men, Good Women (Hao Nan Hao Nu; 108 min., 1995), award-winning film directed by Hou
Hsiao-hsien, will be shown. Refreshments will also be served.
Good Men, Good Women concludes Hou Hsiao-hsien's "City of Sadness Trilogy"-a series of films that highlights important historical events in Taiwan. The film brings into focus the fate of an anti-Japanese heroine during the White Terror era, when hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese who opposed the Kuomintang regime were persecuted under the pretext of anti-communism. Good Men, Good Women was named as the single best film of the 1990s by Cahier du Cinema.
